For this Spring '15 Project | Each student in the studio group chose a Chicago neighborhood to analyze, I chose to study Humboldt Park due to its richness of history and diverse group of community members as well as history of gentrification throughout the years.
The project theme was social housing to residents of the city, although social often suggests mass, I wanted to think of it differently so after a series of studies, I chose to pursue a bar design of units that stacked and staggered onto one another.
While maintaining the residential quality and integrity of the project, my design allowed for a small inner courtyard for the residents of this development and to allow community members to also utilize this space I resorted to lifting my building up 15 feet supported by the structural columns to allow for maximum circulation from and to the site.
